Summer Vacation Extension Under Consideration as Heatwave, Flood Threat Loom Over J&K
Srinagar, July 18: Amid an intense heatwave and fresh warnings of heavy rainfall and possible flooding across Jammu and Kashmir, the government is considering extending the ongoing summer vacation for schools in the Kashmir Valley.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakina Itoo said the government is closely monitoring the weather situation and will soon take an appropriate decision regarding the reopening of schools.
“The government is monitoring the situation closely. Schools are closed till Sunday, and we will take an appropriate decision regarding the vacation, keeping in mind the safety and well-being of our children,” the minister said.
She noted that the Valley has been witnessing unusually high temperatures over the past two days, unlike anything experienced in previous years.
“Education is important, but the lives and safety of students are our top priority,” Itoo added, emphasizing that any decision on extending the vacation would be taken after assessing the prevailing weather conditions to ensure students are not exposed to extreme heat.
Schools across the Kashmir Division are currently observing summer vacations from July 6 to July 19, 2026, with classes scheduled to resume on Monday, subject to the government’s decision.
Meanwhile, weather conditions are expected to take a dramatic turn, with forecasters issuing a flood alert for Jammu and Kashmir from July 20 to July 24.
According to the weather advisory, the intensity and spread of the approaching weather system have increased significantly, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall likely across several parts of the Union Territory during the five-day period.
The advisory warns of the possibility of flash floods, landslides, cloudbursts, and a sharp rise in water levels in rivers and streams, particularly in the Jammu region. Authorities have been urged to remain vigilant as prolonged rainfall could trigger flood-like situations in vulnerable areas.
The back-to-back weather extremes—from scorching temperatures to the forecast of intense rainfall—have raised concerns over public safety, prompting the administration to closely monitor the evolving situation.
The government is expected to announce its decision on the extension of summer vacations after reviewing the latest weather forecasts and ground conditions.
