J&K Advisory Board For Development Of Kisans Organises Training Programme For 80 Progressive Farmers
SRINAGAR, Jun 11: The Jammu and Kashmir Advisory Board for Development of Kisans, in coordination with the Director Horticulture Kashmir and Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture, Science and Technology Kashmir (SKUAST-K), organised a one-day Training and Awareness Programme for 80 progressive farmers from the Kashmir Division at SKUAST-K, Shalimar, on Thursday.
The programme covered important topics including management of high-density orchards, integrated farming systems, awareness on waste decomposer, commercial mushroom cultivation, modern agricultural machinery and tools, and post-harvest processing of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Javid Ahmad Dar, Minister for Agriculture Production, Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, Cooperative and Election Departments, J&K, flagged off the farmers for the training programme and attended the event as the chief guest. Ahsan Pardesi, MLA Lal Chowk, was present as the guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, Javid Ahmad Dar said the J&K Advisory Board for Development of Kisans serves as a common platform for farmers to present their concerns before the authorities. He said the Board comprises knowledgeable members from the farming community, enabling a direct understanding of farmers’ issues and challenges. He added that the Board actively monitors the implementation and impact of government welfare schemes to ensure effective utilisation of resources meant for farmer development.
The Minister said the training programme was aimed at creating awareness among farmers about various Centrally Sponsored Schemes and helping them adopt scientific, sustainable and income-generating farming practices. He described such programmes as an effective platform for the exchange of ideas, knowledge and experiences, ensuring better dissemination of technology at the grassroots level.
Highlighting the importance of technological advancement in agriculture, he said awareness initiatives promoting advanced agricultural practices, diversification in agriculture and allied sectors, and public-private participation would significantly enhance productivity and farmers’ income. He reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering farmers and encouraging unemployed youth to take up agriculture as a viable livelihood option.
Speaking to media persons, the Minister said that apart from Centrally Sponsored Schemes, 29 agriculture-sector schemes are currently being implemented in Jammu and Kashmir, benefiting a large number of people. Referring to the challenges posed by climate change, he stressed the need to move beyond traditional cropping patterns and adopt cash crops, horticulture and allied activities.
He said the department is focusing on skill development for youth along with financial assistance under various schemes. Reaffirming the government’s commitment to farmers’ welfare, he said efforts are being made to ensure that farmers receive all facilities at their doorsteps. He added that training and awareness programmes help farmers understand and avail the benefits of various government schemes.
Among those present were Director Agriculture Kashmir Sartaj Ahmad, Chief Agriculture Officer Srinagar Aijaz Ahmad and other technical officers of the Agriculture Department. Chief Horticulture Officer Baramulla Javid Ahmad, Chief Horticulture Officer Srinagar Jyoti Parashad, Chief Horticulture Officer Budgam Shafiqa Khalid and Chief Horticulture Officer Ganderbal Madan Lal, along with senior horticulture officers, also attended the programme.(DE)
