01Nov, Anantnag: Anantnag residents have complained that the Municipal Council has failed to repair the defunct streetlights in their area, which has resulted in a great amount of distress among them due to the lack of responsiveness from the Council.
The residents of Anantnag town are outraged over the lack of streetlights in their town, alleging that almost 70 percent of the streetlights do not even work and that the authorities remained unmoved by the situation.
According to sources, the street lights from Mehandi Kadal Anantnag to Janglatmandi are defunct from the last six months
There were streetlights worth lakhs of rupees installed in the main market from Mehandi kadal Anantnag to Janglatmandi several years back. But these lights haven’t been working for six months.
The municipal committee Anantnag has failed to undertake the maintenance of these lights said Mohd Altaf a local resident. We have requested to the Municipal Council of Anantnag dozens of times to replace the damaged streetlights of Anantnag with new ones so that people can travel freely at night.
Although the municipality has been reminded many times, these streetlights have not been restored. “We cannot walk in the evenings because the entire area is in pitch darkness,” Altaf says.
As Javaid Ahmad, a local resident of Janglatmandi, told Arising State, ‘it’s very unfortunate that the street lights installed near GMC Anantnag gate are also out of order after being installed for three months, but that the municipal council in Anantnag has been in deep slumber and has failed to take any action to restore them in spite of repeated reminders’,he said.
Meanwhile, Arising state tried to contact the chairman Municipal committee Anantnag Hilal Ahmad Shah but he didn’t pick up our call.
