Srinagar, Sept 8: National Conference Chief Spokesperson and MLA Zadibal, Tanvir Sadiq, on Monday said that the violence at the Hazratbal shrine was a spontaneous reaction to a perceived violation of religious sentiments and demanded immediate action against those responsible, including the Vice-Chairperson of the Waqf Board.

He also urged the formation of a House Committee to probe irregularities in allotments and tenders by the board.

Speaking to reporters, Sadiq condemned the violence but described it as a reaction to the misuse of the state emblem at the shrine. “Violence is no one’s answer. We can address issues better, but when religious sentiments are violated, people’s response can be spontaneous,” he said.

He emphasized that the misuse of the state emblem was a serious violation and must be addressed. “The police also need to act when the state emblem is misused. Whoever is responsible should face consequences,” he added.

Calling for accountability, Sadiq said the first step should be action against the Vice-Chairperson. “Action should first be taken against the VC. The rest of the FIRs should be handled appropriately. Intimidation or arbitrary references to police and PSA are not the solution,” he said.

He further called on the Assembly’s House Committee to investigate irregularities in allotments and tenders issued without proper procedures. “We request the House Committee to conduct a thorough inquiry into these matters and ensure all responsible individuals are held accountable,” he said.

Recalling the historical contributions to the Hazratbal Shrine, Sadiq highlighted the efforts of Sheikh Abdullah in mobilizing donations. “The Waqf Board, previously the Muslim Awaqaf Trust, was built through the dedication of our leaders. Shere-e-Kashmir personally visited homes to ensure the shrine served devotees. Their contributions will never be forgotten,” he added.
