US Trade Diplomacy Helped Broker India-Pakistan Peace: Trump
Washington, May 12 : U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that his administration played a crucial role in brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, crediting trade diplomacy for defusing tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
Speaking about the development, President Trump called it a “historic event” and praised the leadership of both nations for showing resilience and wisdom during a dangerous period of conflict.
“On Saturday, my administration helped broker a full and immediate ceasefire — I think a permanent one — between India and Pakistan, ending a dangerous conflict of two nations with lots of nuclear weapons,” Trump stated. “They were going at it hot and heavy, and it was seemingly not going to stop.”
The President commended the unwavering leadership in both New Delhi and Islamabad, highlighting their ability to understand the gravity of the situation and act responsibly.
“The leadership of India and Pakistan was unwavering, powerful, but unwavering in both cases,” Trump remarked. “They had the strength, wisdom, and fortitude to fully grasp the seriousness of what was happening.”
President Trump also emphasized the role of trade incentives in the peace process. He explained how his administration used trade deals as a tool to encourage both sides to halt hostilities.
“We helped a lot. And we helped also with trade,” Trump added. “I told them, ‘Come on, we’re going to do a lot of trade with you guys. Let’s stop it. If you stop it, we’ll do trade. If you don’t stop it, we’re not going to do any trade.’ People have never really used trade the way I used it, that I can tell you.”
According to Trump, this approach prompted both nations to agree to a ceasefire. “And all of a sudden, they said, ‘I think we’re going to stop.’ And they have,” he concluded.
The ceasefire marks a significant diplomatic achievement amid heightened tensions, with the U.S. President positioning trade diplomacy as a powerful tool for international conflict resolution.
