Ludhiana, Feb 25: In a swift action following the intervention of the Punjab Chief Secretary’s office, the Vice Chancellor of a private university here was removed from his post for allegedly threatening Kashmiri Muslim students with eviction after they requested arrangements for Sehri and Iftar during the holy month of Ramzan.
Official sources confirmed that CT University’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. Nitin Tandon, was terminated from his service on Wednesday. The decisive action came after the matter was escalated to senior state officials by the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA), which alleged that students were not only denied basic religious accommodations but were also subjected to abusive language and threats of academic action.
Nasir Khuehami, National Convenor of JKSA,said, “The students approached us in distress. They were told to leave the hostel and faced threats of admission cancellation simply for requesting meals during Sehr and Iftar. The VC’s behavior was unacceptable.”
The controversy triggered tensions on the campus, prompting senior officials, including Ludhiana SSP Ankur Gupta and SDM Upinderjit Kaur Brar, to rush to the spot to assess the situation. Community leader and Shahi Imam of Punjab, Maulana Mohammad Usman Rahmani Ludhianvi, also intervened, holding talks with both the agitating students and the university administration to defuse the situation.
Confirming the development, University Chancellor Charanjit Singh Channi stated that Dr. Tandon’s conduct was unbecoming of his office. “We have zero tolerance for such behavior. An internal investigation is underway,” he said.
The Punjab Government has ordered a thorough probe into the incident, with a high-level committee headed by the SDM tasked to submit a report at the earliest.
Following the termination of the Vice Chancellor, the JKSA called off its agitation, thanking the Punjab Government and district administration for their swift response. The Association underscored that Punjab has always been a land of harmony and urged all communities to uphold its rich tradition of brotherhood. (KNS)
