JMC intensifies measures as Jammu’s air quality reaches severe levels

With the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Jammu reaching 226, placing it in the severe category, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has stepped up efforts to control air pollution and protect public health. Under the directives of JMC Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav, a series of strict on-ground and regulatory measures have been implemented to curb dust and particulate emissions across the city.

The measures include night-time mechanical sweeping of major roads, daytime water sprinkling in high-traffic areas, markets, and construction zones, and deployment of anti-smog gun–mounted vehicles to suppress airborne dust. Special emphasis has been laid on regulating construction and demolition activities. Construction sites are required to be properly enclosed with green sheets, jute fabric, or plastic covers. Materials must be stored within site premises, while dumping on public roads and footpaths is strictly prohibited. Vehicles transporting construction material must remain fully covered, with regular water sprinkling during loading and unloading.

JMC field officers are conducting surprise inspections, and strict penalties ranging from 4,000 to 50,000 are being imposed on violators contributing to dust pollution or mismanaged construction waste. Solid waste management operations have been strengthened to prevent open dumping and burning of garbage, a major contributor to air pollution, with zero tolerance directed towards burning of waste, dry leaves, or plastic.

Dr. Devansh Yadav appealed to citizens for collective cooperation, urging them to avoid open burning, support cleanliness drives, plant trees, and report pollution-related violations. As part of these efforts, four water sprinklers/multifunctional tanks and two anti-smog guns have been deployed on city roads. These initiatives form part of JMC’s ongoing “Clean Jammu, Green Jammu” campaign, reaffirming the Corporation’s commitment to restoring safe air quality levels and ensuring a cleaner, healthier environment for the city.
