Anantnag, Aug 12: Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has released a statement detailing the medical treatment and circumstances preceding the death of a patient, following allegations of negligence that surfaced on social media. The institution has promised a thorough probe and assured that accountability will be fixed wherever necessary.

According to GMC Anantnag, the patient was admitted to the Medicine Department on Friday, August 8, 2025. The following day, the patient was shifted to the Department of Surgery with a suspected surgical abdomen. On Sunday evening, the patient was moved to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) after being diagnosed with acute pancreatitis, multi-organ failure, and a history of chronic substance exposure.

Hospital authorities said the patient’s condition was critical and further complicated by what they described as extremely aggressive behavior, which was also witnessed by other attendants in the SICU. Despite this, treatment continued in line with established medical protocols.

The statement mentioned that during the SICU stay, the patient developed severe hypoxia, prompting immediate intubation and ventilation. Later, the patient went into cardiopulmonary arrest. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was carried out but the patient could not be revived.

GMC Anantnag also reported that soon after the patient’s death, some attendants resorted to damaging hospital property, forcing the medical team to leave the SICU for safety.

The administration reiterated that an inquiry will be conducted, and any negligence will be dealt with strictly under rules. Citizens have been asked to send complaints against staff directly to the GMC for action.(CNS)
