Day Temperatures Rise Above Normal in Kashmir, Light Snow Likely in Higher Reaches
Srinagar, Jan 17:Day temperatures across many parts of Kashmir remained 1 to 5 degrees Celsius above normal over the past 24 hours, while Jammu division recorded temperatures near normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The highest maximum temperature in Kashmir division was recorded at Muzaffarabad at 14.1°C, while Kathua emerged as the warmest place in Jammu division with a maximum of 16.0°C.
Night temperatures, however, showed a mixed trend. Minimum temperatures remained 1 to 4 degrees above normal at most places in Kashmir, whereas parts of Jammu division witnessed minimums 2 to 3 degrees below normal. Gulmarg recorded the lowest night temperature in Kashmir at –4.2°C, while Banihal was the coldest in Jammu division at 0.6°C.
The region witnessed isolated precipitation during the last 24 hours. The weather department has forecast isolated light rain or snowfall over higher reaches of Kashmir division during the next 24 hours, while Jammu division is expected to remain largely dry.
Looking ahead, the IMD has predicted isolated to scattered light rain or snow across Jammu and Kashmir over the next two days. From January 22 onwards, the likelihood of precipitation is expected to increase, with fairly widespread to widespread rain or snow forecast across the Union Territory.
The department has also issued a fog advisory, warning of moderate to dense fog at isolated places in Kashmir division on January 17 and 18, which may affect visibility during early morning and late evening hours.
Additionally, there is a possibility of isolated heavy rain or snowfall over higher reaches around January 23, prompting authorities and travelers to remain cautious.
The IMD has advised people, especially those in higher altitudes, to stay updated with weather advisories and take necessary precautions.
