Chillai-Kalan sets in with snow, rain ending long dry spell in Kashmir
Srinagar, 21 December :Kashmir entered the 40-day harsh winter period of Chillai-Kalan on Sunday, bringing much-needed rainfall and snowfall to the Valley after an unusually prolonged dry spell that had heightened seasonal illnesses and adversely affected daily life and tourism.
Fresh snow was reported in the higher reaches of the region, including the world-famous tourist resorts of Gulmarg and Sonamarg, as well as Sadhna Top on the Tangdhar-Valley route. In some areas, heavy accumulations were recorded, while the plains, including Srinagar, received intermittent rain and light showers overnight.
Meteorological officials said the rain and snow are expected to continue over the next 48 hours, with moderate to heavy precipitation likely in elevated areas. This marks a significant shift in weather patterns, as the Valley had seen little to no major wet weather until the onset of Chillai-Kalan, leading to increased cases of cough and cold among children and elderly residents.
Locals welcomed the weather change, viewing the first snowfall and rain of Chillai-Kalan as a good omen that may herald a more robust winter snow cover — essential for water resources, agriculture, and winter tourism.
Authorities have also issued travel advisories and traffic plans to help manage road safety under changing conditions, particularly on major routes such as NH-44 and passes prone to snow-related disruptions.
Chillai-Kalan, meaning “the great cold,” traditionally lasts from 21 December to 30 January, followed by lesser cold periods known as Chillai-Khurd and Chillai-Bacha. During this time, temperatures routinely plunge below freezing, especially at night, and heavy snowfall is common at higher altitudes.
The change in weather comes as a relief for residents, who noted that last year’s delayed and sparse snowfall had created water shortages later in the year. A healthy snowpack now is seen as vital for sustaining rivers, streams, and reservoirs into the next summer.
As Chillai-Kalan deepens, officials and meteorologists continue to urge caution on mountain roads and advise residents to stay updated with weather forecasts for safety during this challenging but scenic winter phase.
