Budget 2019: Nirmala Sitharaman presents first budget of second term of Modi Government

NEW DELHI: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday presented the first budget of the second term of the Narendra Modi government.It is  the maiden budget for Ms Sitharaman, who becomes the second woman finance minister after Indira Gandhi to do so in the history of independent India.The Finance Minister on Thursday tabled in Parliament the pre-Budget Economic Survey for 2018-19, which projected the state of the economy and outlined its challenges. The survey was released by Chief Economic Adviser Krishnamurthy Subramanian on Thursday.This will be the 89th Union Budget, which is the financial statement of the government, detailing its revenue and expenditure in the past, as well as estimated spending and projections for the coming year.

Main Highlights of the Budget 2019:

Delivering her maiden budget speech on Friday, 5 July, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed to issue Aadhaar to NRIs with Indian passport without the mandatory 180-day waiting period.

Sitharaman also said the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has “achieved a resounding success”, with 9.6 crore toilets having been constructed since October 2014.

“95 percent of all cities have become open defecation free… Government proposes to expand Swachh Bharat to include solid waste management in every village,” she said.
