Thousands Participate in Peaceful Youm-e-Ashura Procession in Srinagar Amid Tight Security
Srinagar: Thousands of Shia mourners on Friday took part in the 10th Muharram procession in Srinagar, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala.
The procession commenced from Bota Kadal and proceeded towards Zadibal, with mourners reciting elegies and performing chest-beating rituals in remembrance of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad.
Authorities had made elaborate security and traffic arrangements for the occasion. Personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF and other security agencies were deployed along the route, while drone surveillance and CCTV cameras were used to monitor the procession and ensure public safety.
Ahead of the event, Srinagar Police issued an advisory urging participants to observe the occasion with peace, discipline and communal harmony. Mourners were requested to cooperate with the administration, follow designated routes, respect the sentiments of all communities and avoid any activity that could disrupt law and order.
The advisory also cautioned against raising provocative slogans, making inflammatory speeches, displaying objectionable banners or flags, damaging public property or engaging in actions that could disturb public peace. Authorities appealed to citizens to maintain cleanliness and assist volunteers and traffic personnel in ensuring the smooth conduct of the procession.
Youm-e-Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram, marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), who was killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE after refusing to pledge allegiance to the Umayyad ruler Yazid. His sacrifice is remembered by Muslims across the world as a symbol of truth, justice and resistance against oppression.
