Washington/Tehran/Islamabad: US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian have formally signed the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” (MoU), a landmark agreement aimed at ending the months-long conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, according to US officials.

The memorandum, which was electronically endorsed by both leaders, reportedly lays out a framework for ending hostilities, reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and initiating broader negotiations on regional security and Iran’s nuclear programme.

According to officials cited by international media, the agreement includes Iran’s commitment not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons, while paving the way for a 60-day negotiation process to address outstanding issues and implement long-term measures. The MoU also envisages the resumption of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor.

Despite the agreement, Israeli military operations in Lebanon reportedly continued, highlighting the challenges surrounding the implementation of the ceasefire provisions.

Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem welcomed the development, describing it as a “big victory.” He stated that any future negotiations between Lebanon and Israel should focus solely on “mutual security” issues.

The agreement marks one of the most significant diplomatic understandings between Washington and Tehran in recent years and is expected to influence regional security dynamics and international energy markets. However, analysts caution that several provisions remain subject to further negotiations and effective implementation on the ground.
