Washington, D.C. :  A suspect armed with multiple weapons was taken into custody Saturday night after charging a security checkpoint near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, prompting a rapid law enforcement response and a temporary disruption of the high-profile event.

According to authorities, the individual — identified by law enforcement sources as a 31-year-old man from California — allegedly approached the checkpoint before gunfire erupted. He now faces federal charges, including using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said.

A member of the U.S. Secret Service was struck during the incident but was protected by their gear and has been hospitalized. Their condition has not been publicly detailed.

Attendees inside the Washington Hilton, including journalists and public officials, were forced to take cover as law enforcement quickly secured the scene. CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, who was outside the ballroom at the time, reported seeing the gunman open fire just feet away before officers intervened.

Former President Donald J. Trump, who was present at the event, was immediately escorted from the stage along with members of his Cabinet. Officials confirmed that Trump and his team were not harmed.

In a post on Truth Social shortly after the incident, Trump praised the response of law enforcement:

“Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended… we will be guided by Law Enforcement.”

He added that while he had suggested continuing the evening’s program, authorities would determine whether the event could proceed, noting it would be “much different than planned.”

The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine the suspect’s motive and whether additional threats exist. (CNN)
